Our physical body is surrounded by a field of energy known as the aura.
The chakras are spinning wheels in the aura that regulate the flow of energy into the body. If any of these become blocked (under-active) or too open (over-active) the flow of energy is disturbed, affecting our over all sense of health and well being.
There are seven major Chakras:
Root Chakra - the root chakra sits at the base of the spine. When it is balanced we have a sense of power and security. When unbalanced we may feel impatient or angry, our behaviour may become impulsive, violent or manipulative.
Sacral Chakra - based just below the navel a balanced sacral chakra gives us a feeling of confidence, assertiveness and joy. When unbalanced we may feel sluggish and inferior, our self-esteem may be low and we tend to be become trapped in negative thought patterns.
Solar Plexus Chakra - sitting above the naval the solar plexus controls our sense of empathy. When balanced we are organised and logical. When unbalanced we may be lazy and over emotional, often affected by other peoples feelings and problems.
Heart Chakra - the heart chakra is situated over the heart. When balanced we are loving, generous and compassionate. Our self-confidence is high and we are accepting of others. When unbalanced we may feel unconnected from our feelings and find it difficult to show love. We may become jealous, insecure and resistant to change.
Throat Chakra - the throat chakra is located over the throat and is linked to communication. When balanced we are able to speak freely and are receptive to what others are saying. When unbalanced we may find it hard to explain how we are feeling. We may find ourselves being disloyal to others or feeling stuck in situations or emotions.
Third Eye Chakra - sitting on the forehead when balanced the third eye chakra allows us to be intuitive and perceptive. When out of balance we may feel spaced out and fearful, often living in the past. We may feel overwhelmed by other people's feelings.
Crown Chakra - the crown chakra is located at the top of the head and is concerned with our spiritual connection. When balanced we feel creative and compassionate. When unbalanced we may become arrogant and be over-controlling of others. We may find our imagination 'working overtime'.
Balancing the Chakras
There are many ways to balance the chakras, and other aspects of your body's energy flow.
1) An alternative therapist such as a kinesiology practitioner, reiki healer or energy worker will be able to assess your bodies energy flow, including the chakras, and correct any imbalances.
2) T'ai Chi and Yoga are good forms of exercise for maximising the flow of energy around the body.
3) As each chakra responds to a different vibration gemstones, colours and / or essential oils can be used to balance them. Specific stones, colours and oils vibrate at the frequency needed by specific chakras. To use simply burn the appropriate oil, place the gemstone over the chakra, close you eyes and visualise the colour pouring into the chakra.
For a full balance place a stone on each of the seven chakras.
Root Chakra - Hematite, Red, chamomile, geranium, lemongrass, peppermint and rosemary essential oils.
Sacral Chakra - Red Jasper, Orange, eucalyptus, lavender, patchouli and vetivert essential oils.
Solar Plexus Chakra - Citrine, Yellow, cinnamon, juniper berry and peppermint essential oils.
Heart Chakra - Green Quartz, Green or Pink, cypress, geranium, peppermint and ylang ylang essential oils.
